I don't intend
to "teach" something about Germany, everybody should be able to make up
his own mind about Germany. For that reason I want to encourage people with an interest
about Germany to try and explore Germany by Internet. I know that this is
not easy, because the Internet of Germany has one difficulty for foreigners: Everything
you find there is in german language. But if you take a closer look on german language,
you will find out, that many words in german language look similar to english words.
Because I love my "hometown" Cologne very much, I want to give some general
information about Cologne and invite everybody to visit Cologne by Internet. To experience
Cologne is to become acquainted with the centre of Europe.
Marked by 2000 years of history from the Romans to the present, Cologne has many
visible tracks of this history. Far back in the Middle ages, it was the destination
of millions of of traders, pilgrims and tourists. The city's landmark is the Gothic
cathedral, which has its 750est anniversary. As a fact, Cologne is always celebrating,
not just because of its world-famous Carnival.....In our days Cologne has developed
to a top centre of media, arts and business. It is the largest city (~one million
inhabitants) on the Rhine.
Cybertrip to Cologne/Cybertrip nach Köln
There are two possibilities to go there on the web. You can go directly to www.city-guide.de
or you can "travel" by Yahoo. I will describe to go by Yahoo, because you
might find other interesting links. Go to www.yahoo.de
and you'll be at Yahoo Germany. You will find out easily, that the topic-list is
the same as in the English-version. Click on "Staedte und Laender", which
means "Towns and Countries". You will get another list, click on "Deutsche
Staedte", which means "German towns". After that an alphabet is shown.
If you want to see Cologne, you have to click on "K", because Cologne means
"Köln" in german language. Click on "Stadtführer",
which means "Townguides". I consider the Columbus City Guide the best,
because it offers many photos of Cologne. Try and click on "Stadtführer"
und "Sehenswert", which means "worth to be seen". From there
you can see a little phototour, or get pictures from 19 walks through Cologne. If
you choose the topic "750 Jahre Kölner Dom", you'll see pictures of
the famous cathedral. Click on "Dr Dicke Pitter"( the fat Peter ) and you
can hear its bells in real audio. Of course "Szene und Kultur" means "szene
and culture". Among this, you can find famous bands from Cologne, some of them
offer sound examples, but I admitt, unfortunately in poor sound quality.
Learning and Studying in Germany Germany has its own specialities concerning "Universitäten"="universities"
and "Fachhochschulen"="Colleges". One of them is: Studying in
Germany is for free! This is a great advantage for everybody here and is offered
to everybody from abroad, too. You will find a list of german universities and colleges
on the main page of Yahoo in Germany. |
