raditionally, when #siam began, there was no operator. This is because people were sick of Operator kick/ban war in #thailand. A channel without channel operators is ideal for talking, everyone is of equal rights as anyone else, but, in IRC, that doesn't really work. When the channel got more popular, there will always be people trying to become operator sooner or later. IRC is not a perfect world, containing both those who like to chat, and those who like to abuse ops. The latter case, are who enjoy mass-kicking, banning people they don't like (private war), making a the channel private (invite only), etc. Therefore, a public channel needs an operation security. A group of users who can maturly deal with Ops, to protect the channel from abusers. To defend the channel, users ran more bots, which - if they're not configured correctly - this can also created a mess .

All bots in #Siam is set not to AUTO OP to any user (not giving operator status upon channel entry.) OP will be given upon user's request. The good point with this was that:

Creating a nice talking atmosphere, there's no intimidation creat by users with Op. #Siam is a chat channel, not operator play ground.

Mass modes was minimized during net splits and joins. Bot is set to prevent server hack op to prevent taking over, it will deop user if they have op, when net split and joined back, thus, can create mass mode change, flooding channel if users were to be Oped. Op are only use when nescessary, not for show off or to play with.

As for the current #siam operator, the old method is still being implemented. No "AutoOp" for users, only to bots. In case things go wrong, users can ask for OP from the bots. Everyone is a potential user and Op is given based on trust, and trust is earned over time. Those who miss-treated the trust and the "responsibilty" that goes with it, by abusive the use of operator status, messing up channel modes or making mass personal bans, will be taken out of user/operator list. Repeated offenders are usually placed on "Auto kick and ban list", to prevent them from messing up the channel again.
