#Siam (Channel Siam) is
an interactive Internet Chat channel where people from all across the globe talk
in real time. # Siam, is one of the hundreds of IRC channels.
This is where people who have interests in Thailand, its culture, and people, would
come in and interact. All sorts of activities goes in here. People come it to; kill
time(a break from school), chatting, B.S. ing, find friends, looking for lover, make
new enemies, flirting, exchange files (DCC), trade pictures, practice verbal abuse,
play with BoTs, Spank their MonKeys, etc. As weird as it sounds, to many,
this highly addictive cyber space environment exist a life of its own, IRC life style.
IRC and physical-reality merged quite often when people meet up.
Many people trys to disassociate IRC from real life, but the fact is that the time
you spent in IRC is part of that person's life. The characters you learned about,
can, for better or for worse, one way or another, influence and even changes the
way you think, the way you live, in real life. Now there are so many communication
free communication tools avaliable such as Internet Phone, ICQ, VDO conferencing, etc. How the internet has effect the way people
interact and communicate with one another is definitely the subject of today's discussion...
and far into the future. Ded Dee Deee DuM'' (Twilightzone jingle) - Written Feb.

#Siam was create in 1994 when people migrated from #Thailand
due to constant floods and mode changes. Channel flooding were generally created
ted by 'lame' (or very bored) people and Bots war. #Siam was created as
a get-away from a rather violent, #Thailand. #Siam is a channel devoted to talking
only.
Over time, the channel gained popularity, it has evolved to become what it is today.
One of the contributing factor is students from Thailand has gained access to IRC
to join in the fun. Along with popularity, comes conflict between
users, one party wants to keep the other party out.. and there was abusive use of OP (Ability
for one to kick and banned another) which turns into IRC war. To keep the long story
short, after the war, there are now many people who still enjoy using #SiAm. Despite
an occasion of IRC wars and channel take overs, things are working out OK. People
still make new friends, exchange information, flashing Thai (electronic) smile =)
Let's hope it won't face the same tragic end as what happened with #Thailand back
in 1994. The epic continues... |

Channel Siam has wide range of user in terms
of age, background and interests. In the beginning, most of the users are college
students from universities around the world and mostly are in computer related
field. As internet become well known and more commercialized, we now have wider variety
of major, both students and working professionals. Age range between users goes anywhere
from 12 year old middle schooler up to 50 plus. In busy time, around midnight EST,
#Siam carries more than 100 people.
IRC, is an attractive communication medium for all sort of people, perhaps maybe
it provides an equal ground where anyone can talk to anyone, anywhere. People
can 'escape' their stressful world and join the world of IRC. In IRC, a lil 12 year
old boy has as much communication rights as a business CEO.
The only thing that makes people 'un-equal' in this IRC environment, technically,
is the operator status, or shortly call "OP". Channel OP has the
ability to kick/ ban another person, thus, a version of Cyberspace 'power'. This
OP power is sought after by many computer geeks. They often inhabit IRC in
the form of bot runner, IRC script writer, 'channel take overs'. The ultimate
form of IRC geeks is "IRC Operator", with the ability to "kill"
and ban hosts accross IRC servers. With such "god like" power, some developed
a rather obnoxious, 'superior-being complex' (until their computer crashes). Many
IRC users spend their time drowning
in the quest for OP, by trading bot access, taking over channels, and forgeting what irc is all about: having fun
meeting, chatting with people from all over the world.
Being able to remain anonymous, if one wishes, is both fun and frustrated
for many people. IRCers often put on their acting mask and pretend to be something
they are not, and since you can make-up ide your identity, IRC is great playground
for multi-personality freaks. Say you are perceived as a shy, introvert, ugly-duckling
in real life, you can be a gorgeous, high self-esteem princess in IRC. Perception
can be decieving in the net.
One of my IRC friends, a guy, gets the kick from making another guy falling in love
with him by pretending that he's a girl. Eventually the fun turned bitter when the
guy wants to meet up with him. Constant lying effort is wearing my friend out. Remember
IRC is mainly 'TEXT' communication. A world of "Finger acting" so
to speak. For some people, this role playing is very entertaining, but for many sincere
users, this is rather frustrating. People often do not feel responsible for their
action when they are anonymous. They tends to think what they do in IRC environment
will not effect their real life, which often lead to irresponsible actions that can
hurt other 'sincere' IRCers.
This is part of the reasons we placed #Siam on the web, and why we have people's
corner. People's corner blends in real life personalities and the world of IRC.
A place for users and channel
operators who are not afraid to reveal their
identity for the benefit of making new friends. A place where users can put
in pictures, contact information, and a description of who they are. If you are here
for the purpose of making new friends, people's corner is for
you. |

This is about #Siam Operators, #SiAm
Culture, the way it was, the way it is intended to be. This section includes a brief
story of how Operators evolves over time and finally, what principle it is being run today. We also have examples of abusive users. We document
this so that future channel users can learn from the problem and the benefit from
our experience. If you are thinking about joining or currently using IRC #SiAm. It
is a good idea to read through!!
Suggestions and Comments are welcome! :) |
When there are a group of people with difference in values,
attitude, behaviour, and motives, in the same room... sharing only one thing in common
=selfishness=, there are bounds to be conflict, just a fact of life. We don't go
around playing moral cops, tell people how they should behave, and we don't call
them abusers if this guy hates that guy.
What we define as 'abusive' behaviour is when one intentionally, do something damaging
towards the mass of the channel, against the channel's purpose (for chatting). Things
like Flooding, mass flash, Mass nuke, mass kick, mass ban..etc. So we had to come
up with a 'fair'(voted) set of rules to achieve our common goal, keep the channel
for chatting, not for someone to play with "operator powers". Those who
breaks the rules, are abusers. |

NET PERVERTS
Being able to be anonymous,
if one wishes, can creates both the fun and frustration for IRC users. People often
put on their acting mask and pretend to be something they are not, and since you
can hide your identity, IRC is great playground for Net perverts, and multi-personality
freaks.
