Purpose of this page

Definition of sexual harassment

Although people have different opinions, there are some joint things that many people consider to be sexual harassment. Which might be asking for sex, or making sex related comments. Just "flirting" is not the same, although keeping messaging someone against his/her will, might be considered "harassment".

Discussing the problem

Those females that I've asked about this issue, have all once or more been sexually harassed. Both by public channel messages, and private messages. Some might say that IRC shouldn't be taken too seriously, and I agree about that. Sexual harassment is not a new phenomen, it's old and common. But that doesn't mean that it has to be accepted. Everyone has the right to enjoy IRC, without being forced to be an object or "tool" for someone's perverted mind.

On IRC, it's much more easier to say whatever you want, than in real life. You don't have to take any consequences, just sit there hiding behind your screen. Some of the abusers are actually Thai males, but the big majority consists of non-Thais. Sometimes it happens that racist remarks are included.

IRC is mostly populated by males, so it has become a "hunt" for females. Very commmon questions on IRC are "Any girls here?" and "Are you m/f?". Now I'm not saying that asking any of those questions is sexual harassment, but might - in some cases - be indicating what that person wants.

What to do about it

1. Use ignore command so you won't see his messages.
2. If the abuser is on the channel and you're channel operator, try kick & ban. You can also ask a channel operator to do that for you. Just explain your problem and he/she might help you out. Please make sure that the operator you're talking to is not a bot. :)
3. Warn other people, if you see him joining the channel regulary. There might be serveral victims, not only you. If someone joins the channel and repeatedly sexually harass you or others, you can ask a bot owner (or anyone who has enough access level) to add him to AutoKick List. He would then be automatically kicked & banned on join.

I'm strongly agree with that.. Somehow.. it won't change anything.. cuz we, thai, got very bad reputation to the other.. I don't know why.. every country on earth do have prositudes.. may be they are more than us... but they wouldn't said it.. I couldn't agree more about the article above. Nothing pisses me off more than mindless morons who have their brains between their legs! Having lived and travelled extensively in Asia for many years, I often feel embarrased by the offensive behaviour of many western men who see Asian women as nothing more than sex objects. It reinforces common stereotypes of both the Asian ladies and western men. I only wish that I could believe there would be a time when people accept each other for who they are, and recognize the intrinsic value of every human soul - irrespective of the appearance of the body in which it is housed! Maybe I'm a bit of a dreamer? But my many friends throughout Asia have made my life so much more pleasant just by the friendship they have given me, and I consider myself extremely fortunate to return such friendships.
