Definition of a Strong Woman

July 28, 1997

By : Areeya Chumsai

A strong woman knows who she is.
She doesn't need to compare herself to others. She doesn't follow all the latest trends. She doesn't become a fashion victim, a prey for aggressive marketers, advertisers and sales that screams out 'You need more clothes, more cream, more makeup, more youth potion and magic that makes you young forever. SHE knows that is impossible. She doesn't need other's approval to know who she is or want to be. Vogue doesn't need to tell her who she should be, how she should talk, how she should walk. In fact, she doesn't need to always prove her worth in society's eyes by wearing the latest this and the most expensive that. She doesn't stare in the mirror and worry about crow's feet, sagging boobs, expanding thighs and who's going to love her now. She doesn't try to do the impossible -- fight against time.

She lives for the moment. She doesn't dwell in the past or worry about the future. She doesn't worry too much, think too much, care about others too much.

She knows her limit and accepts it.She doesn't party too hard or work too hard. She doesn't abuse her brain or her body, meaning no smoke, no anything she'll regret the next day. She sleeps when she is tired and she eats when she is hungry. She doesn't skip meals to look like some skinny model or some standard number of 36-24-36 and 110 lbs. Numbers that doesn't add up to being beautiful or normal.

She knows her strength. She knows her weakness. She tries within her power to improve her faults, like better public speaking and a cleaner glovebox and drawers, but she knows her limit too. She doesn't always hate the image in the mirror. She doesn't always become insecure looking at it. She doesn't hide behind a thick layer of makeup and hairspray.

She is strong inside yet compassionate outside.
She is confident, secure yet approachable and down-to-earth. She is a good listener and a good friend. She can keep a secret. She doesn't spread gossip. She smiles a lot. She makes those around her feel relax and happy by just being around her. She is this way because she is a strong woman.

And she is who I want to be.
