"Most Thai women
that I know are ...[fill in your favourite label]."
How many times have Thai women been misrepresented on the Internet? Well, I've lost count. Recently, a Siamwebler got fed up with the stereotyping of Thai women. She suggested that we should give a balanced view of who Thai women really are. Who are Thai women, anyway? A Penpal club (which sells Thai women's addresses) describes Thai women as committed house-wives. A bitter spouse says Thai women are greedy, narrow-minded, promiscuous and dishonest. A bar-goer views Thai women as hot and sexy. An image-conscious Thai portrays Thai women as intelligent and conservative. A homepage presenting Thai models/singers/actresses reinforces the belief that Thai women are beautiful. Well, I am a Thai women and most Thai women I know don't fit into any of the labels. There are a broad spectrum of Thai women who differ in beliefs, tradition, education, financial situation and values. It is an oversimplification to assume that thirty million Thai women belong to any particular category. An article in a recent bestseller book written for Thai students abroad makes similar blanket statements about women of other nationalities; Japanese women are [...], Indonesian women are [...] . Why is there a need for these assumptions? Perhaps, there is a psychological explanation. Perhaps it is simple ignorance. If we want to stop the stereotyping of Thai women, we should also be fair to women of other nationalities. As Nicholas Negroponte mentioned in his book, "Being Digital", the notion of "nation" will someday be obsolete. Siamweb would like to help speed up this process by diluting the steoreotyping of Thai women. We present you with homepages by three genuine Thai women. In this 'Thai women cool pages', their homepages will speak for themselves. Hopefully, this will lead to a broader view of Thai women.

Her resposibility includes writing, directing and acting in plays that address social issues, i.e., AIDS, democracy, etc. The play troop goes around the country to promote social awareness. In her homepage she mentions that her other interests includes poetry and woodworks.

She hopes to update it soon. Her idea of a cool homepage is a homepage with goodies that doesn't too long to load. (We all can relate to that). Her htmling started out with her wanting to know a little something about electronic publishing. Currently Ph.D. candidate in Telecommunication and a part-time SCTer (more of a lurker), she is particularly interested in Thailand's Internet development and policy making as well as many atheletic activities. She claims she resembles Lisa Simpson with a better hairdo. Well, one has to see to believe. :)

| I was surfing on the net and by accident found this site. I am a computer professional who had a 3 year stint working in Bangkok, Thailand. I lived many interesting experiences but none like the one I´m going to tell you. This is all before I started Training at a Gym in Bangkok. For people who never went to Bangkok, let me tell you, it is a place where the cost of living is low, anything (and I mean anything) can be bought for a price, and the women are friendly as well as beautiful (but that is another story!). For people that never heard about bodybuilding let me tell you that it is the most misunderstood of all areas of weight training, although the most sought after and most popular. As a competitive sport, it is the actualization of muscle density, shape, hypertrophy and symmetry. For most people who follow it, and who does not compete, it is simply the use of weights to aesthetically change and improve the body. In its early pre-Schwarzenegger era, bodybuilding was looked upon as some strange sort of subculture whose participants must surely have some kind of character flaw for them to partake in a activity so bizarre. But today bodybuilding is the body what is plastic surgery is to the face, a surefire method to bring about amazing changes. I have lifted weights since college but I have never had any real gains due to my fast metabolism, lousy diet, and not keeping a disciplined approach. Bodybuilding requires years of constant effort and any lapses in training is just like starting from ground zero. Believe me if it weren't this way everybody in the street would look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. But this was all before I started training at a gym in Bangkok and the owner introduced me to A-50. After taking 2 tablets and then up to 5 tablets a day, I suddenly noticed extremely rapid gains in weight and muscle mass! I tell ya, this stuff is awesome!! Before, I weighed 155 lbs and benched 185 lbs (the bench press is the most popular bodybuilding exercise, the others are the squat, the deadlift and the power clean, all are used in powerlifiting too, except the clean which is from Olympic weightlifting), and after 5 months of the stuff, I weighed 175 lbs and benched 330lbs!!!! Even the owner of the gym couldn't believe how much I have gained! I was huge and I realize that this "high" was quite addictive which is hard to give up. Not only that, I attracted beautiful Thai women like bees to honey. I was and still is the man! Yet, there is price for all this muscle! I started loosing hair, I am constantly horny (not a bad thing since it made want to fxxx anything that had a hole and a pulse...well forget the pulse!), and the stuff made me constantly hungry. Not only that, mixed with alcohol, I became violent and wanted to beat the sxxx out of everyone. This stuff is not for everybody and inspite of the pitfalls of taking A-50, I will not give it up! They say youth is wasted in the young, well let me tell you this, this young guy is going to enjoy all of his young years even if it is going to kill him! CarpeDiem!" |

| John-I love Austin! I like how it's different from the rest of Texas. I haven't really followed the music scene since Ed Hall broke up and Sweet Pea too. And the whole SXSW thing is so disappointing. I did brave 6th Street a couple of months ago to see the Donnas. But I had to leave before they came on. I did see the Scabs on the local music channel but I haven't seen them live. Check out the Mermaids, they put on a rockin show. |

One or two of the bands sucked (Great White) but the Toadies toadally rocked! Don't get down to 6th street very much...its gotten too touristy...but the warehouse district still rocks and then there's Stubb's, La Zona Rosa, and Antone's. | Brian-my world is very far from Thailand and the sex industry and would never consider myself to be an expert on either. But in some opinions it is believed that Thai women are able to perform 'guilt free sex' because of their Buddhism faith which allows them to separate their soul from their reality. I would not say that is true for all Thai prostitutes but I I believe any prostitute/pornster would have to be able to separate their soul from their body to perform be it they use religion, hate, or drugs. I do disagree with you about there being no social stigma attached to prostitution in Thailand. First, pimps and mamasams prey on the poor and feed on their desires. It is very much class oriented. I doubt that you would ever find a Thai prostitute that came from an upperclass background. Being poor is a strike against anyone almost everywhere and to be a prostitute... Second, you said that a man could not bring a prostitute to party for she would be shunned, that a Thai upper class woman would not be caught dead with a Westerner for fear of being thought of as a prostitute. And why would you say that she is foolish to go if she has been invited? I think she has balls! Is that not social stigma? The people may accept that prostitution exists but they won't have anything to do with a prostitute(except, of course, behind closed doors). Thais are very opinionated (at least the ones I know) and will tell you straight out what they think. You have no chance of being accepted socially if you are prostitute. And the government won't take a strong stand for fear of losing their tourism dollars. Prostitution has given women opportunities that they would not receive had they decided to work in a factory and that is just not fair! Why should a woman have to spread her legs just so she can feed her family (or buy that new dress, in some cases). We all need and want things and it is not greed. But I'm rambling. The government has played pimp in the prostitution of Thailand and now that it is cashing in they have done nothing for the women. Instead they allow more foreign companies to build factories and bring in foreign workers. Damn, it's the same as when they let Thailand be the r & r spot of the Vietnam War. But for the women, there are now programs where they can learn English, to read and write Thai, and health and sex issues (and I don't know of any that are government funded). |

You should remember that the world is far from being perfect, in the ideal world there should be no prostitution, no drugs, no crime, no war, no injustice, etc. In the case of Thailand I found a site that says that prostition is accepted by society and that prostitutes are not discriminated, something that is good since in the west prostitution is also implicitly accepted but officially it is said to be not. What makes the problem wrost is that prostitutes here are socially discriminated something that does not happen in Thailand (and I think Asia in general not including Islamic countries). The site has this description of Thai women:" 1- What should I know about Thai women? Thai women are like women anywhere: some nice, some not so; some pretty, some not so. Do NOT (also in the rest of Asia) mistake personal grace for subservience. When treated badly, they will react the same as people anywhere. Same goes for Thai men. When deliberately insulted, Thais are capable of sudden and (to the recipient) astonishing violence. Thai boxing is not the sport of pacifists; and in the Vietnam War, Thai soldiers were the most feared by the Viet Cong. They can, and if pushed will, kick your butt. Or worse. Behave decently and politely at all times, to everyone. 2. How do Thais regard prostitution, and prostitutes? Depends. Prostitution in Thailand has long been an accepted (if not universally loved) part of the social fabric. It does not carry the stigma, either for the women or their customers that it does in the West. IMHO, this is primarily due to the fact that Thais adhere to a very different tradition from the guilt-laden and highly proscriptive Judeo-Christian one. In general society, prostitutes are not very discriminated against; but you wouldn't bring one to a party (where, no matter how conservatively-dressed and soft-spoken, she would, by a mysterious process, be instantly identified as what she was and cut out of the conversation. Maybe because she was foolish enough to show up with you, for example. Many, if not most, upper-class Thai women wouldn't be caught dead with a Westerner, no matter how "nice" you were." I don't know if you agree with this but it would be interesting to see what you since you know better Thailand than I do. In the case of porn stars in America I can say that there are some women that actually choused to be porn stars and had fantasies in being so. So sushee in the case of prostitution I agree more with you than in the case of porn, not all porn, I´m referring to the one done in California by industries like VIVID, VCA, etc. Not the underground porn. Sure they may be consenting but would they consent if they had other choices? In Thailand, the government does not even acknowledge the existence of prostitution. So if it doesn't exist, it can't be regulated which leads to many abuses. Since you are somewhat of a connoisseur of porn, might I suggest a few books? Travels in the Skin Trade and Hello My Big Big Honey. I have not read Big Big Honey but both are about prostitution in Bangkok with essays by the men who frequent the brothels and the prostitutes who work in them. | Iceman I can understand your angry about kids being abused and exploited but you should wine down and think for a while. If everybody would take action in a context like that by no time you would be in a totalitarian country. If you banned all kind of porn in hope to stop kid exploration what you would get was an even worst situation with all kind of underground guys taking charge in the business with no control at all. You know as far as know, porn movies are legal, at least in California, and that way the producers and all people related, are some way controlled, if they where banned there would be no control at all and everything would be worst. Kid porn, as far as know, is forbidden in the U.S, and like you said, it still exist. The same go for child prostitution. I'm not saying it should be by any means legalized, NO! Child exploration is a serious problem because most child can't make decisions by themselves so they must be protected someway. The people who like child and go to others countries looking for child are not the same who see adult movies, off course there are exceptions. Most people that see movies are couples, although I do not have statistcs. It is just a feeling. When I said that I think that porno is not bad I was not including child porn, fetishes, fisting and all kind of degrading porn that exist. I'm talking about legalized porn between consenting adults. I know something about this and in interviews that I've read most the girls are not against the industry, once again there are exceptions, but most of them are business women and work as free agents, they do not belong to anyone and are not obligated to do things that they do not want. If that happen I think that in the U.S there is police and courts and they are there to deal with problems like that. If you would just ban any kind of porn a underground business would appear, totally uncontrolled. The same goes for abortion or prostitution (once again not of kids), in any country that it is forbidden it does not stop it gets worst. What you have to do is to guarantee every person rights and freedoms and they should as adults be able to make an option. You may remember the case of Tracy Lords (an actress from the 80´s) that made movies using a fake ID when she was 16 and 17 and when she was 18 (in 86 I think) she revealed her true age. Do you know what happened? All movies of her where taken off the market and many producers where presented in court, although they were not condemned because she fuelled everybody, including the producers, actors and the police. Even the FBI got involved and she was kicked out of the industry. I think that their movies are still available in France, Greece, Spain and Portugal because the law allow people with 16 to do movies. By your words I think that you know or have a personal case relating kid prostitution or exploration, that is understandable but you should take it is because this are the kind of problems that should not be taken or dialed in a personal way. Remember no judge is good in its own cause. |
