Here are the Internet service providers in Thailand. The service is getting much better than before. Should you wondered why the Internet evolution in Thailand is so slow why cost is so high and why the connection speed is slow. Well, aside from technical and infrastructure problem in a certain area where there's no phone, part of the reason is the Big Fat CAT (Communication Authority of Thailand) are eating free meals, holding shares in all ISP company, while letting ISP lease on their supa expensive international network. So how do u expects Internet to be cheap?

Who's strong enough to wrestle with CAT to change their policy? Oh.. maybe a few barks from Mr. PM Shinawat himself? *Woof* The new law will also allow ISP from foreign land to provide services for Thai. That'll cook up decent quality/price meal.

Can't wait till the net is free for everyone or at least locally between business. That'll loosen up the road traffic. Maybe they undervalue the amount of untapped mind-power from the people. They have their reason, seeing young folks blowing away their brain cell with YahBah n all that ;)

If you wanna make comments about the ISP you are using, use the comment form below! Let others know if you found a good one, and if they sucks, save others from makin the mistake.

Wonder how big their net lines are for each ISP? Not all ISP connectivity are the same. Some has large pipe, some has small, which effects their price. Look for international and local link and whether they uses Fiber optic lines or Satellite. They all effect the connection speed. Here are nectec's collection of published Internet connectivity maps of Thailand

Large Internet networks in Thailand. Thailand has three large local public networks, maybe more that I don't know of. One is Nectec's Public Internet Exchange (PIE) network, which you can see their Traffic Statistics 8-day Average here. There is other large network for local ISP to connect to call NIX (National Internet Exchange) by CAT. The other network is ThaiSARN which main goal is promote research in networking technologies and applications. All of the three networks have their links to the international networks. In order to connect to PIE and IIG network ISP has to pay $.. and that's allot of $$

Then there's the International Internet Gateway (IIG) by CAT which connects local network to the international lines. All ISP can connect to IIG also at a price.. And since CAT is the only one with the authority to allow any company/network to connects to international lines, they holds share in all ISP. They can also demand crazy prices for ISP to connect to their network. That's part of the reason your net is expensive, and that's why some ISP has a small link.

I just don't get why Thai Government rushes to make profit from the Internet at the early start, which slow down the overall development. Imagine if they made policy to embrace and promote Internet as if they are necessity, not luxury, then it'll be cheap, then more people can access it, thus create more demands. Once the mass is hooked on the net, everyone can make allot more money out of it. Greed has no patience.

Perhaps the government fear the people would learn too fast? know too much? Cmon, we're not in a communist nation... or are we? Imagine what a free nationwide intelligent mind network could do? Farmer reporting plant decease while getting remote diagnostic real time. That's some motivation to learn how to read huh? hehe Perhaps they intended the net for those who wears suits and tie?
