Tired of the smog and chaos of Bangkok? Looking for a great escape for the weekend? Imagine your picture perfect tropical paridise, pack your bags, grab your friends and head to Samed Island. Here's my review of what I consider to be one of the most beautiful islands.

There were 5 of us, me, Putt, Sanpet, Shu, Ake, and Poom. We started our adventure early morning in a car ride from Bangkok to Ban Phe. You could take a bus from the Ekamai station as well, but, do keep in mind that it does get a bit hectic during the May holidays! The ride from Bangkok to Ban Phe is about 3 hours. From Ban Phe, we had a 30 minute boat ride over to Samed Island.
Click on thumbnails to see larger size image.

We could see our island in the distant, and the sun was bright as ever. You could breathe clean air too! Docking the boat was interesting, as the boat never really docked, we all have to jump over onto these posts of wood to get off. I can imagine the numbers of people that have fallen in before!

Real FOB ;D

There are lots of different beaches around the island. The closer you get to the southern tip of the island, the more secluded it is. Some of the more beautiful beaches, such as Ao Giew, are down there. Our destination for bungalow was Ao TubTim, a cozy beach, great for a friends' trip. We took these Song Taew over to the beach, and the ride over was worth the trip itself. The road was all dirt and full of ditches. In a scrappy truck with screwy tires, this was off roading!

Z wild Trucks

Here we go!

After checking into the room, we quickly changed and hit the beach to explore the island. Walking around the island, you really turn your sandles into hiking shoes! There are lots of cool angled flat rocks to climb over in between each of the beaches. You find crabs and other shell animals living on these rocks.

How's the water?

The food, however, is pretty bad here. I would recommend fried rice or something. They can't go wrong with that. We tried to get too adventurous and ordered som tum and other sorts of unidentifiable foods, ick!
Ake: Is that crab really raw?
Sanpet: yep, it's raw
Anita: *Ummh*p*

In exploring the island, we found lots of cool things from neatly combed trees to a great sunset spot. One word of warning though, if you're going to walk around the island, be sure to get back to your sleeping spot before sunset. There are no lights or directions on the main road, you are looking at a true bonding night with nature and her mosquitos if you don't!

"Carpet Cat"
The bungalow was a little place with plenty of places to sleep. Putt decided to rough it in the wilderness with the local dogs, hope they didn't mark their territory on him! As for us, we had a "carpet cat" that we wiped our sandy feet on before entering the bungalow...heh. Yeah, I know, we're mean people.

In addition to exploring the island, we also had a great time sleeping on the white sand beaches, and tackling the water sports. We all tried our hand at wind surfing, but Putt was the only one that went somewhere with it. Somewhere far, soooo far that we attempted a rescue by inner tube...(ehem, attempted).

In our snorkeling adventure, Sanpet stabbed himself in the foot with one of them pointy corel that stings...owee. And Poom cut his foot on corel! You gotta be careful around that stuff. Otherwise, it's just like another world down there. Big giant colorful things with living things in their own community. It's just like on the Discovery channel, and more beautiful in real life.
By the end of the weekend, we were sad to leave. But, we know that Samed Island is only a couple hours away, so we'd be back someday. Thanks for a great time P'Putt, P'Sanpet, P'Shu, P'Ake, and N'Poom!

Good to read and see photos about Koh Samed. I was there last February and stayed in a bungalow on Diamond Beach. What a wonderful place that is ! I just returned from my seventh visit to Thailand, and 'am sorry to say that I did not get to the south of Bangkok. (I did visit the North-East of Thailand and 'am very happy that I did.) I think that the people of Isarn are so very warm-hearted and welcoming ! But..on my next visit I will take a bus and a boat to Diamond Beach and, once again experience the great beauty of my "favorite place in the sun !"

I am from Canada and worked in Bangkok for six months, and visited Samed five times. I love it because it's so beautiful, fun and close to Bangkok. I'm back in freezing cold Canada now, and only have warm memories.

Good site. No mention of the Diamond Bar with its excellent fire shows that you can join in with, or the copious amounts of Sang Thip whisky that can be drunk. Also watch out for the mad woman called "Suni" at the Gekko Bar in Au Phai

I loved Samed a lot. Usually, I will go to Samed Island at least one time in a year. Now I missed it for 2 year but I still remember the wonderful thing at Samed Island. If I have chance, I will go there again. I'm waiting for my closed friend to come back from Australia. That is the good chance that I will go to Samed with my closed friend.

I have been there 2 times. First time in Feb. 1996 and second time in late Mar. 1997. My first time was my friendship trip together with my close friend. We had a great time there. Sleeping, Swimming, Singing, Walking, Playing and Eating. My second time was my vacation after a busy & terrible days. I also had a great time as usual, but not the same feeling as my first one. Anyhow, I still love Samed a lot and wanna go there again if I have a chance to do so. I love sea, sand, sun, sky, stars & beach a lot.
