This year's Labor Day weekend we decided to head east again, this time we went down further from Jantaburi to Trad heading for "Koh Chang". We are now not very far from the Thai-Cambodian border. Click on the map icon below to see where we are.

Koh Chang translated as "elephant island", is just what the name symbolized, large. Its the second largest island in Thailand next to Phuket. Koh Chang is not as developed as koh Samet, it is more quiet and peaceful. The beaches at Koh Chang isn't as pretty as samet though. There are other attractions which makes Koh Chang interesting place to visit. There are waterfalls, forests, fruit plantations, scuba diving, boating around to see other surrounding islands.

From the pier,Koh Chang doesn't seem so far away.

The boat sails from Laem Ngorb to Koh Chang every hour starting from 7am to 5pm at high 'tourist' season. At low season: 3 times a day 9am, noon, 3pm.

You can bring your own car over to Koh Chang and drive around. It cost about 400 baht per car including the driver and 50 baht for each aditional person. The ferry to take you from the mainland to Koh Chang takes about 45 minutes to an hour. If you don't have a car, there are buses to take you around.

Maybe Thailand isn't known as an innovative culture, but one thing we are famous for; that's our ability to hack! On both getting on and off the island they try to jam as much car as possible..leaving only inches between each car.. just when you think its really full, they packed two more. There's no such thing as "limits" or safty regulations here.
Car ferry sails 3 times a day. 7am, 10am, 2pm

Koh Chang's road way is much more developed than just a few years back. Most of the track is now paved - a smooth ride. The road goes almost around the island.

All good things must comes to an end..
.. then better stuff came along!

The pavement road ends, muddy, slippery road begins. Bonk hasn't got around to test out the 4WD function of his Pajero until now. It was good fun.

We passed a few beaches along the way but we didn't stop. Since we didn't have much time before the boat leaves the island again we decided to stoped at the furthest beach, which supposedly is the most beautiful on the island.

The bumpy ride can put a bit of pressure on the bladder... and since toilets are nowhere to be found..

Nueng marks his territory at Koh Chang.

<-- Are these little islands
for sale?
We stoped for a sec to apreciate the view.
It took us about an hour to an hour and a half to get to our destination : Gai Baeh Beach

We parked the car at the only resort there, Sea View Resort, and walked down along a nicely designed garden.

The view was nice. The beach was shallow. There were some people standing up far from the shore. We didn't go check out the water since we don't have that much time.

It was constantly drizzling rain. It is said the best time to come here is during Nov. to May. Rain came early this year, spoils some of the fun.

This was just a few hours visit for us, but if you want to stay, there's plenty of things to see and do: waterfall, hiking up the forest, Check out the fruit farm, scuba diving, boat ride.

Oh, take mosquito repelant if you are planing to spent the night or do hiking.

At low tide, you can walk over from the main island to the other island on the right.

Its raining, the water doesn't look all that inviting..The couples (Bonk & Toom, Choo & Ne) are cuddling. That leaves me and Don, the singlets with nothing much to do.. err.. huhuh Goofy pose time!

We haven't left the island yet, Choo already thinks about coming back here.If you get a chance to visit Koh Chang or have been here, and liked to share your experience, please write your comment below.

Till next trip! -- C-ya

I have spent each winter on Koh Chang for many years now. I believe that the best place to holiday is Kai Bae beach. The location and setting is far superior than White Sand beach which is far too close to the road. You are about halfway down the west coast so it is ideal for visiting White Sand to the north of Kai Bae or The fishing village of Bang Bao to the south.Coral Resort at Kai Bae is good value and is at the quiet end of the beach. To get to Koh Chang you now Have many choices. From Bangkok you can get a mini Bus from Khaosan road direct to the ferry port. From Ekamai bus Terminus you can get a blue bus to Trat then a shared taxi to Laem Ngop, which is the passenger ferry port. From Pattaya there are mini buses run from Koh Chang travel in soi Post Office each day. There are also two car ferry companies running from either centre point or Ao Thammachat.
I have travelled almost every where in Thailand and I can assure you that Koh Chang is a wonderful experience. If you go to Kai Bae ask for Peter the old English gentleman staying near Coral Resort. He is wonderful company and a mine of information.

Had my second visit to Ko Chang (Feb 2000), still a great place, if anything White Sand Beach has improved. My first visit to the island was December 1997. Alina Resort is a great place to stay and Thor's Palace is a top spot for a few libations before calling it a night.
If you have a few bucks, Ban Pu Hotel would definitely be the place to stay.

PartieMingle : Yes, there are elephants on the island! I saw two brought down to the sea for a wash & a swim (Hat Sai Kaew - Feb. '99). Mind you, I think that this is a rare occurence.

Koh Chang is really a great place to relax and forget about the real world. If your ever there visit the Magic Resort and tell "Gen" Barry from Ireland sez' hello...and have a few Big Chang beers on me!

We first went to Koh Chang (Kai Bai Beach) in 1991, then again in 1994, and thought it had changed a lot in between. Were heading back in a few weeks, and it looks like its even busier than before. Hopefully still a peaceful and relaxing place, cause this time were taking our new baby! Anyone with more info on places to stay at Kai Bae (with Air-Con) we'd like to hear from you.
