early 1900's. When he came here he Americanized his name to Fox from either
Fuchstein, Fu__stien (it translated innto a 4 letter word), or something
close to that spelling. I'm pretty sure whatever the name was, it meant
fox stone in German. I know that my family was Jewish, if that helps w/
the last part (stein or stien). When he came w/ his family from Germany,
he settled in the S. Eastern corner of Pennsylvania. The story is they

I have been told that my last name, Mergott, originated witha Duke from
Austria in the 13th Century. His name was Heinrich Jasomirgott, taken
from his favorite oath, which meant "God help me." I read in a German
book that his name was originally Jachsamergott, but modernization of
the language (I guess) makes it Jasomirgott now and that is how he is
known in the history books. I once wrote to a professor in East Berlin
(back when he Wall still stood) who had written a book on German surnames
and asked him and he did not know the answer. Any help here would be greatly
appreciated. Does this theory make sense. I have also been told that the
13th century was about when surnames came into use in Germany. -Thanks.
Jack Mergott

My great-grandfather's last name was Shamburger. He lived in Mobile,AL.
during the 19th century. A distant cousin said he was German. Another
said that he was Jewish. Could they both be right, and that he was a German
Jew? Please help. Thanks

Thanks.

Thanks for the delightful insight into germanic names. My name, for example,
is a mixture of the christianic-judaic "Andreas" (from the greek word
"Andros, which means "the man"), and Hechler, which shows that my ancerstors
weaved (oldgerman verb=hecheln) Flacks (Flax, a type of grass, of which
the fine innerstrands where used to weave anything from carpets to clothes).
My great-great grandfather for example carried his towns name as part
of the surname. If anyone knows anything else about my surname, please
contact me via e-mail or IRC. Anyway, thanks for the lovely Homepage.
See ya, Andi P.S. I can be found on IRC on EFNet in #germany at around
+- 19:00 GMTas spectra or on my HP: HTTP://home.global.co.za/~hechlerp/
