How will the dam construction at Kaeng Sua Ten. affect Thai rain forest in the long run? Khun Theerapat Prayurasiddhi contributes an article about why we need to save the rain forest. What do you think? Enter your comment. :)

SAVE THAI RAINFOREST

Not only in dry season that the farmers can't grow their agricultural plants because of no water but also in rainy season, many people complain about too much water and flooding. What is happening??? Is water a problem??? Many people said that the water was a problem. They don't look for any reasons that cause those events. Therefore, they have claimed that dams will be the answer to solve both drought and flooding problems.

Most of the new dams will be constructed in the protected areas ( National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Non-Hunting Areas etc.) such as Mae Wong Dam in Mae Wong National Park, Nakorn Sawan. Why they like to build dams in the forest. The reason is that they will not pay for the biodiversity damages cost. Therefore, our large areas of rainforest will be flooded and cut down. Moreover, many rare wild animals will die because of drowning and hunting. It will be very pity for our rainforest situation in the future.

The forest areas of Thailand in 1994 were about 26.6 % of the total land areas ( it should be 40 % ). I think that there are about 20-25% right now. However, only 15-20 % are protected areas. The largest forest areas of Thailand is in the western forest complexs including Huai Kha Khaeng (HKK) and Thung Yai Naresuen (TY) Wildlife Sanctuaries.

UNESCO has just declared both wildlife sanctuaries to be a natural world heritage site since 1991. There are more than 600 species of fishes, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and birds in HKK-TY Wildlife Santuaries. The area of HKK-TY is about 3,800,000 Rai (6,000 sqkm). There are a lot of biodiversity there. Many conservationist try to protect HKK-TY now.

However, there are some protected areas around Thailand that we need to help and take action immediately. Therefore, we should do somethings to save our forests right now before it will be late.

May 38,1997 First of all my name is Noel and I care about the environment. First of all People should learn learn to get along with the Wildlife & adapt to the environment and it's natural habitats, not by building big cities by creating distruction in their path every where they go by the way technalogy is created. People have been on this planet for centuries, the natives (other cultures), they have been doing fine with-in the environment until another culture;race forced them to live/learn their ways of being domestic, teachings of law, destructive paths. You and everyone else out their knows about History but in the form where you sometimes may not see it in a clear way/form and so you & no one else will relize how to make up for what our history upon the whole world did with the technalogy for senseless stupidity domestic wars, whole way of life changed things. Wild animals in the rainforests, jungles etc. have been able to live for survival like any other creature would except for us,people have used to live in the wild like all otheer living things except now every body almost the whole freaken world is domesticated because of what power to control people so now wev'e got this entirely new more comlicated and complex law of "so called social living" of a domestic life people think it's free well this is not reall life reall life is to be out away from it all out in the wilderness where theirs no hassle of any of these all kinds of extras domestic problems or power over one another,it's become so disgusting, despise of arrogance I have ever seen all other cultures fighted for their will their rights their race whole way of life living away from a domestic life to be able to travel freely with out certain rules that go by Government law cause they didn't need any their social life was totally different the way they were set up their whole existence was based on the true way of living in the environment. Now every one has lost that over what domestic power of of destruction over ignorance!! "pathetic" Cars=pollution drugs=bad health stores=overpopulation, littering, wiping out recources. Machinary=faster devastation, destruction, pollution etc. all these things lead to in the same catagories of destruction in one form and in many others they all relate to each one another including NUCLEAR POWER PLANT you or 1 another said leads to NUCLEAR WASTE man made stuff was never intended to stay or hold together stay in one form or another they'll always be disasters to the causes of people from pollution, destruction except we can stop that in which we will be able to get along with nature people have broken THE CHHAIN, BARRIER, CYCLE OF LIFE Destruction & Creation are =. but not in this case people are doing harm in which ways the tools are more too destructive hazardes to use so get rid of that kind of technology. Written in ? finished 9:23pm by an 8th grader made to look like an (who knows) :old wise person,100,000 yrs old "before people start relizing"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!................,,,,,,,,,,,,,,/////////////''''''""""""""""""""""""" "Oh please" email me cause I could sure use some help""

I think building dam for electricity is such a cheap action. Nuclear power plant is definitely my choice.

Well, it is not only in Thailand that we, humankind, destroy everything we could ? It seems to be true that we are very dangerous species and troublesome. In fact, there is no free lunch, if Thai people need something to be done then do it, but be concern for the long run. Be thoughtful, think hard ! Is it worth ? Is it waste ? Or is it benefiting someone ? I am not taking side because I am not an expert on environmental stuff. If there may be the better way out, then the gov't should take some action. I therefore want the gov't to think harder because this is a very big decision to make, think of the profit in the long run. and our next generation and another species beside human because they are also have the right to live and remain there. We, human, have done so many selfish thing already.

Well, don't your guys ever play simcity. Power is everything. We've got to find a way to create power(electricity). I am in for the nuclear power to save rain forrest.

In response to the last comment, you can get more info to these questions (Thai version): Are there really any valuable trees left at the dam site? Will there be significant power producing capability? Can the dam prevent flooding? Why was it necessary for the out-going government to approve the project 6 months before the required environment study was completed? at here

yujira from esys10297.esys.cwru.edu on Tuesday, December 10, 1996 at 03:35:47

Personelly, I think if we look at the problem from both sides,we'll understand what people are thinking about. There've been a lot talkings about the number regarding theexisting rain forest. Frankly, I've hardly heard about what'sgoing on from EGAT on the demand of electrical power in Thailand andthe reasons why we should build dams. If there's someone froma relevant organizations can present this information, that should be helpful.Well, as far as I know, dams cannot produce as much amount ofpower as other plants do. But then this is the issue of weighingbetween pros and cons of the amount of power gained and the lossof 'green areas' (notice I didn't use the word rain forest becauseI didn't know if thhe Kang Sua Ten area is still considered arain forest as most of you claim or not since I haven't beenthere. I hope most of you who claim have seen the sight before.)I think if what you claim is true, be careful using the Internetnext time because every minute spent on the Internet could meanripping a leaf of trees away from the forest.

By the truth, I have no idea how can we solve this problem. The problem is that we need more power. As I can thinkof only wind mill, solar cell and dam, that will not createthe polution when it is operate. Wind mill normally will notproduce much power. Solar cell has the same problem, plushigh cost. Dam is good but some forest is gone. The pointis that the problem will be solve if we can reduce the amountof wasting energy or we have a new way of producing the power.Anyone has any idea how to solve this problem, let me know also.I really want to know how to handle this. Should we go for Nuclearpower plant which create dangerous waste but can be control?Or should we stop using the Internet to save power?

I am a vegetarian, not for guilt trip animal rights , but I was reading long ago about the horror that the meat production for human consumption cost the planet... You get only 1 pound of animal protein for 16 pounds of grain protein fed to the animal and it is doubted that more than 50 % of animal protein can be digested by humans , cows produce one third of the atmospheric methane pollution and are responsible for the companies need to kill rain forest , there are many other negative results of the meat production for human consumption... The really sad thing is that it is no more necessary for human health than smoking cigarretts... I am one of the healthiest people I know and have consumed no meat products for 15 years ! and no I don't think fish is a plant ! ,

Here's a few rainforest fact quoted from here

"200 million indigenous people depend directly on the rain forest for food and shelter.

At current rate of destruction in 37 years the rain forests will be GONE!

Rain forests cover only 2% percent of the Earth's surface but rain forests house over 50% percent of the Earth's species.

Over 50% percent of original acreage has been cut down. "

6 species are lost to extinction every hour. 50 million acres are being cut down each year. This is the size of England, Scotland & Wales combined.

2.4 acres are being cut down each second. This is the size of two football fields.

25% of medicines owe their existence to plants. 70% of plants useful in cancer treatment are found only in the rainforest. 99% of rain forest plants have not yet been thoroughly examined for their medicinal properties.

Burning of rain forests is the second largest factor contributing to the greenhouse effect.

55 square feet of rain forest is destroyed for each quarter pounder of fast food hamburger. 400 million quarter pound hamburgers are made from rain forest beef each year.

One of the world's largest destroyers of rain forests: Mitsubishi (cars, electronics, Kirin Beer, Nikon cameras, Bank of California, etc.) " ...

If you really want to worry check out population crisis. Take a peak at your future window... It ain't a pretty picture. - PuTT
