Black May 1992
eng | ไทย
In
1973, we'd thought it would never happened again. The people Thailand's
freedom of speech and the right to know would never again be stripped
down to that of a country under dictatorship. In 1992, nineteen years
after the Bloody October, we were proved wrong.
Six years ago, Thais students abroad
recieved faxes of The Nation and Bangkok Post from Thailand with most
columns blacked out. It was May 1992, the time when freedom of the press
as well as the Thais were suppressed. The world watched when the military
used deadly forces against thousands of demonstrators. Six years later,
many questions still remain unanswered. Many people still remain unaccounted
for. As we lookon Indonesia and be reminded of how
According
to the U.S. Human Rights report (1997): " The number of prodemocracy protesters
officially listed as missing following the military suppression of demonstrations
in May 1992 was reduced to 38 after one individual was located alive.
Her disappearance had not previously been related to political activity.
Most, if not all, are presumed by family members and nongovernmental organizations
(NGO's) to be dead.
